Orchard Revival Project – Growing Together at Westmeath
The Bermuda Botanical Society is delighted to support an exciting Orchard Revival Project at Westmeath, a not‑for‑profit organization with registered charity status. This special initiative aims to breathe new life into the existing citrus orchard, transforming it into a vibrant, productive, and welcoming green space for staff and clients alike.
With a little care—and the right plants—the orchard can once again flourish. Beyond providing fresh fruit, the revived space will offer a peaceful outdoor environment for relaxation, learning, and connection with nature.
Plants Needed for the Project
To help restore and enrich the orchard, the following plants are currently being sought:
Jamaica Vervain (Stachytarpheta jamaicensis)
Jamaica Scallions / Welsh Onion / Bunching Onion (Allium fistulosum)
Turnera (Turnera ulmifolia)
Easter Lily
Pigeon Pea (Cajanus cajan)
Darrell’s Fleabane (Erigeron darrellianus)
West Indian Thyme (Coleus amboinicus)
Each of these plants has been carefully selected for its suitability to local conditions and its contribution to a healthy, diverse, and low‑maintenance landscape.
Designed for Sustainability
The project is being guided by Jonathan Lightbourne, permaculture specialist, who is working closely with BBS to ensure the orchard’s renewal is not only beautiful, but also sustainable and resilient. The goal is a space that supports biodiversity, requires minimal upkeep, and continues to thrive for years to come.
How You Can Help
By contributing plants, expertise, or support, you can play a direct role in reviving this meaningful green space. Together, we can help Westmeath’s orchard grow into a place of nourishment, restoration, and enjoyment for the entire community.
If you are able to assist or would like to learn more, we would love to hear from you.
Let’s grow something lasting—together.
